Discount retailer Aldi has announced that it will work in partnership with Preston Retail Skills Shop, run by Preston College, to promote this year’s Aldi Apprentice Scheme.

Applications for the scheme are now open as the retailer looks to hire in excess of 500 apprentices for its growing portfolio of stores across England and Wales, with Preston Retail Skills Shop looking to take on around 15-30 apprentices throughout Lancashire.

Preston Retail Skills Shop will assist Aldi with the application process and identifying suitable candidates.  Details on these colleges and how to apply can be found on Aldi’s recruitment website, with candidates expected to start on the scheme from the start of September.

As one of the largest retail apprenticeship providers, Aldi is looking to attract ambitious and talented individuals to work for one of the fastest growing retailers in the UK.  Applications for the scheme are open until Friday 21st June through Aldi’s recruitment website,

Aldi launched its National Apprentice Scheme in February 2012, and has since created more than 200 jobs to attract young people towards a career in retail, and with many unable to or not wishing to attend university.

Aldi store apprentices are trained in all aspects of Retail Management within three years.  The scheme offers store assistant training in year one and store management training in years two and three with a salary of £5 per hour rising to £7.19 per hour and working towards a title of ‘Deputy Manager’ for the highest performers upon completion.  Aldi apprentices will also achieve a Retail Apprenticeship Level 3 qualification, which very few retailer apprenticeships currently offer.

By the end of the scheme, the most successful apprentices will have the opportunity to progress to the position of Assistant Store Manager with a starting salary of £26,500 plus bonuses.  By joining the Aldi Apprentice Scheme, young people could ultimately be fast tracked to a Store Manager position if they excel during training.

Leila MacGarrow, the project lead for the Aldi Apprentice Scheme said:

“We are looking to attract committed and resourceful young people across the UK to join our apprentice scheme.  Successful candidates will be joining one of the most dynamic and fast-growing retailers in the UK, with a proven track record in developing its staff.

“Our apprentices who have been with us since last year have shown a real passion for working at Aldi, and have been invaluable in helping to drive the business forward from a store operations perspective.

“Aldi’s partnerships with Preston Retail Skills Shop, in addition to The National Skills Academy for Retail, are critical for selecting suitable candidates.  Our apprentices are given real responsibility from day one, with the opportunity to learn about the business from a grassroots level, and we expect our recruits to progress through to managerial level.”

Cailtin Myers is one of Preston College’s apprentices and works at the Blackburn Aldi store. She added:

“The best part of the job is definitely gaining new skills and the qualifications, and being consistently challenged. Aldi also helps to ensure that the balance between in-store work and my studies is manageable.”

“The scheme consists of much more than I expected, given the range of work I am required to do.  You also gain qualifications whilst on the scheme and have the opportunity to apply for middle management once completed.”
