College Apprentice Scoops NHS Award

News - Thursday, 17th March, 2016

Danielle Tomlinson, 25, an Apprentice Clinical Skills Technician employed by the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has won an NHS award recognising excellence in the workplace.

As part of her Level 2 Laboratory Operations Apprenticeship at Preston’s College, Danielle joined Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Clinical Education Team in May 2015 and assists in the provision of education to Trust employees, student nurses and undergraduate doctors.

The talented apprentice triumphed over more than 30 other entries in the ‘Living the Values’ category at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Workforce & Education Directorate annual awards for her work, which involves preparing samples for courses in surgical skills, helping to run undergraduate exams and setting up high-tech patient manikins.

Danielle was awarded first place in the category by Karen Swindley, workforce & education director and Karen Partington, chief executive at the awards event held at Park Hall Hotel, Chorley. The outstanding apprentice was praised for being caring and compassionate, building team spirit and taking personal responsibility for all aspects of her work.

Danielle said: “It’s brilliant to have won an award – after I got over the shock of actually winning! It just shows how apprentices can be counted on and valued as part of the team.

“Preston’s College have been really supportive and at the age of 25, I decided to take a risk and change my job completely from a care assistant to studying an Apprenticeship. I’m really glad I did because I thoroughly enjoy my job and without the help and support from the College and my employer, I don’t think I would be where I am now in my career.”

Aidan Blunt, NHS clinical skills manager and who nominated Danielle for the award, added: “Danielle has always been a high-performing apprentice. She took a chance with a career change to take up the apprentice opportunity and it is really paying off.

“Everybody that works with her comments on her enthusiasm, attitude to work and how quickly she picks things up – she fully deserves the award.”
