News - Monday, 1st December, 2014

Preston’s College Men’s basketball team got back to winning ways this weekend as they led from tip to buzzer in a 64-50 home victory over Leeds Tigers at home in National League Division Four.

Melkisidek Moreaux continued his hot form with 18 points and was backed up captain Daniel Miller on 13 and Anthony Stanhope with 11.

In an entertaining first quarter the team struggled to get into any kind of offensive rhythm yet managed to squeeze out a one point lead at the end of the first quarter at 19-18. Joel Ufele and Jonny Joseph did most of the damage inside the paint with 15 points between them. The lead progressively increased as the first half came to an end with the home side in front 34-27. Yet in the third quarter they put the defensive clamps on the visitors by only allowing them just seven points by which time they had a commanding 47-34 lead. The team maintained the pressure throughout the fourth and ran out comfortable winners.

“It was great to get back in the win column” remarked Preston Head Coach Malcolm Leak. “We played much better defence than the week before against Newcastle. As the game progressed we ran Leeds into the ground and they couldn’t adjust to that intensity.

Despite the win the team remains in fifth position in the National League Division Four North with 5-3 record but with a game in-hand over fourth placed Gateshead. It was a great weekend personally for Melkisedek Moreaux who had top-scored with 20 points in the U18 game the night before against Sefton. He stated “I think that I started slow but picked it up later on in the game. I fought for the defensive and offensive rebounds. We’re doing alright as a team but we can still get a lot better with our execution.”

The team now take to the road next weekend as they prepare to face a Lancashire Spinners side who have lost four of the last five. “We’ve got to get better defensively,” proclaimed Coach Leak. “When you wear that Preston’s College uniform you’ve got to give it your all and leave everything out there on the floor. We will go over our game plan this week in practice and be better prepared mentally as well as physically to face the Spinners.”

In other action the U18 outfit easily took care of Sefton winning 69-48. The win takes them to a season-best 4-0 as they prepare to take on Cheshire Panthers at home this Saturday at 1600hrs.
