10 New Civil Engineering Vacancies

Matthews & LeighConstruction & Civil Engineering specialists Matthews & Leigh are looking to hire up to 10 new Apprentices in time for the New Year!

To help achieve this the Coppull based company are holding an open Recruitment Day in association with The Job Zone at Preston’s College on Thursday 17th December at 9am.

This rare and exciting opportunity is ideal for those aged 17+ who are looking to build a successful career in the construction and civils industry with an established and successful local construction company.

You don’t need to apply in advance to be given the chance of gaining one of these sought after apprenticeships. Simply call The Job Zone on 01772 22 52 22 and let them know you would like to attend.

The day will begin at 9am at the Matthews & Leigh base on Chapel Lane in Coppull (near Chorley) with a presentation to help you get to know the company a little bit better as well as how it can help enhance your career going forward.

This will be followed by an informal chat and brief maths and English assessment. If you impress, you will be given the opportunity to interview with a company director later that afternoon!

If successful, you will be given the opportunity to start the role in January 2016, training one day per week to pick up your qualification and working on building sites across the North West four days per week.

The Apprenticeship itself will last between 12 and 14 months with progression opportunities including becoming a site manager, quantity surveyor, buyer or plant machinery driver.

What would the role involve?

If you enjoy practical work and want a job outdoors, then working on a construction site could be for you.

To be a Construction Operative/Groundworker, your duties will include:

  • Groundworking – marking out and digging shallow trenches for foundations and drains
  • Concreting – layering and tamping concrete for foundations and floors
  • Road working – concreting, laying kerbs, paving and re-surfacing
  • Road surfacing – working with the surfacing team to lay / construct road pavements

The successful applicant will learn how to use various hand, power and machine tools and, with further training, you could operate construction plant equipment, such as dumper trucks or excavators.
